 Cairo Reflex

I shot this piece while hosting two of my classmates from Berlin at my house in Cairo. During their visit, which had been my first visit home in a long time, I was re-familiarizing myself to the city I no longer lived in and to the experience of being a woman on the streets of Cairo, while also feeling responsible over my two white female friends who stood out in public while the three of us toured the city.

This project was an experience of seeing and re-writing my own relationship to the city from behind the camera and guiding in the dark while my eyes are adjusting. Throughout the process I was looking at Cairo through their eyes while observing their gaze on my own city, testing my nostalgia against the reality of Cairo, while examining my instinct to create a certain narrative of the city that is cautionary, but not hostile.

Crossing
private | public

This project honors the space between the public and the private lives we lead. It recognizes that  we must celebrate not only our confidence, our presence, but also the work we put into ourselves every day that allows us to move from te private to the public.
